Dr. Sanford J. Cohn completed his Ph.D. in the psychology of mathematically precocious youth at Johns Hopkins University and subsequently joined the faculty of the College of Education at Arizona State University. His focus there has been on the education and development of academically talented young people, and in 1979, he started the Center for Academic Precocity.
Dr. Cohn co-edited with William C. George and Julian C. Stanley Educating the Gifted: Acceleration and Enrichment and is the author of numerous articles on assessment and identification of academically talented youth, program evaluation, and intellectual talent.
In 1990, he began to explore alternative behavior sampling techniques to identify talented migrant education students. The resultant program, called Conexiones, brings secondary school-age migrant students to ASU for a two-week workshop and introduces them to state-of-the-art technology, which they use to build and program a robot using the Lego Dacta materials, or write articles for the Conexiones Web site.
Dr. Cohn is professor in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction and the Division of Psychology in Education at ASU. His research interests remain focused on issues related to growing up gifted, but have also evolved to consider all aspects of the development of talent and the creation of optimal learning environments. The role of technology is of special interest to him.
